One item on the agenda for the upcoming NPFMC meeting in Anchorage is final action on the update to the Salmon FMP.
The preliminary preferred alternative is alt. 3, which would exclude traditional drift areas in Cook Inlet, PWS and Area M from federal jurisdiction, instead putting these areas of the EEZ under state management exclusively.
The preferred alternative is a graceful way for the Council and NMFS to remove themselves from the sometimes contentious management of salmon in Alaska.
